Understanding the Fibres Behind Every Pair
At SocksWorld.in, we believe that informed buyers make better purchasing decisions. The material composition of a sock determines almost everything about how it performs — comfort, temperature regulation, moisture management, durability, odour resistance, and how it holds its shape over time. This guide explains every major hosiery fibre and knitting construction used across our six brands, so you can match the right material to your customer's needs with confidence.

1. Natural Fibres
Combed Cotton
Combed cotton is the gold standard for everyday premium socks. During production, the cotton is passed through fine combs that remove short fibres, immature fibres, and vegetable matter — leaving only the longest, strongest, and smoothest threads. The result is a yarn that is significantly softer, more lustrous, and more durable than regular cotton, with less tendency to pill. Combed cotton socks feel noticeably better against the skin, hold their shape longer, and maintain colour vibrancy wash after wash. Used extensively in Nuvinor and Hobrik premium ranges for Ladies, Gents, and Kids.
Regular Cotton
Standard cotton is the most widely used hosiery fibre in India — affordable, breathable, hypoallergenic, and widely accepted across all retail segments. Cotton socks absorb moisture readily, making them comfortable for light to moderate activity. However, cotton dries slower than synthetic fibres when saturated, making it less ideal for high-intensity sports. Available across all six brands, with Dufizo offering the strongest value-market cotton range for everyday Gents, Ladies, and Kids socks.
Bamboo Viscose
Bamboo-derived viscose fibre is one of the most exciting developments in modern hosiery. It is naturally antibacterial due to a bio-agent called bamboo kun, which inhibits bacterial growth and dramatically reduces odour. Bamboo socks are exceptionally soft — often compared to cashmere in hand-feel — hypoallergenic, and highly moisture-wicking, making them ideal for sensitive skin and warm Indian climates. They are also biodegradable, giving them strong sustainability credentials favoured by European export markets. Available in select Nuvinor and Hobrik collections for Ladies and Gents.
Merino Wool
Merino wool is the most versatile natural performance fibre available for sock manufacturing. Sourced from Merino sheep, the fibre is ultra-fine, soft against the skin (unlike coarser wools that cause itching), and naturally temperature-regulating — keeping feet warm in winter and cool in summer. Merino wool also has outstanding natural odour resistance thanks to its complex protein structure, and wicks moisture effectively. Used in Yukon Youmeet's premium trekking, hiking, and winter sports socks for Gents and Ladies.
Regular Wool & Acrylic Blends
For warmth-focused winter socks at accessible price points, wool and acrylic blends offer an effective balance of thermal performance and durability. Pure wool provides natural warmth but can be expensive; blending with acrylic fibres reduces material cost while maintaining good thermal insulation and improving abrasion resistance. Available in Yukon Youmeet's winter range and Dufizo's value thermal socks for Gents, Ladies, and Kids.

2. Synthetic & Engineered Fibres
Nylon (Polyamide)
Nylon is the primary reinforcement fibre in hosiery manufacturing. Added at 15 to 30 per cent in the heel, toe, and high-wear zones of the sock, nylon dramatically improves abrasion resistance and extends sock lifespan. Without nylon reinforcement, cotton socks in high-wear areas thin out rapidly. Nylon is present across virtually all SocksWorld.in sports, trekking, and performance socks under Yukon Youmeet, Hobrik, and Dufizo. It also improves the dimensional stability of knitted fabrics.
Polyester / CoolMax Performance Blends
Polyester is a quick-drying, moisture-wicking synthetic fibre widely used in sports and performance socks. Unlike cotton, polyester pushes moisture away from the skin surface to the outer layer of the sock where it can evaporate rapidly — a property critical for blister prevention during running, gym training, and outdoor sports. CoolMax is a branded high-performance polyester specifically engineered for enhanced airflow and moisture management, used in Yukon Youmeet's premium sports range for Ladies, Gents, and Kids.
Elastane / Spandex / Lycra
Elastane (also called spandex or Lycra) is added at 2 to 5 per cent to provide the stretch, shape retention, and snug fit that every good sock requires. Without elastane, socks sag, bunch, and lose their form after a few washes. Elastane ensures the sock conforms to the foot contour, stays in place during movement, and recovers its shape after every wash. Present in virtually all SocksWorld.in brands across Ladies, Gents, Kids, and Sports categories.
Modal
Modal is a premium semi-synthetic cellulose fibre derived from beech tree pulp. It is exceptionally soft — 50 per cent softer than cotton — highly breathable, and retains colour brilliance extremely well after repeated washing. Modal resists shrinkage and fabric pilling better than cotton, making it ideal for premium Ladies and Kids fashion socks where colour and texture longevity matter. Used in select Nuvinor and Hobrik premium fashion ranges.

3. Knitting Constructions
Terry Knitting — Full Terry vs Half Terry
Terry knitting is a specialised knitting construction where loops of yarn are woven into the inner surface of the sock fabric, creating a cushioned, plush, towel-like interior. These loops increase the surface area of the fabric, dramatically enhancing moisture absorption, cushioning, and thermal insulation. Full Terry socks have terry loops running throughout the entire sock interior — from the toe to the cuff. This creates maximum cushioning, warmth, and moisture absorption. Full terry socks are ideal for heavy sports activity, trekking, winter wear, and heavy work boots. They are thicker and more insulating, making them best suited to cooler conditions and high-impact activity. Available under Yukon Youmeet sports and winter ranges. Half Terry (also called Partial Terry or Terry Sole) socks have terry loops only on the sole and heel of the sock, while the leg section remains smooth. This delivers targeted cushioning where it matters most — under the foot — while keeping the leg portion lighter, more breathable, and lower-profile in the shoe. Half terry socks are ideal for running, gym training, and casual sports where some cushioning is desired without excessive bulk. Available across Yukon Youmeet, Dufizo, and Hobrik sports lines. Non-Terry socks have no loop-pile construction and feature a smooth, even fabric surface throughout. They are lighter, more breathable, and lower in profile — ideal for dress socks, fashion socks, and warm-weather everyday wear where cushioning is not a priority. Used in Nuvinor formal and Ziloo fashion ranges.
Compression Knitting
Compression socks are knitted using specialised circular knitting machines that apply graduated pressure — highest at the ankle and progressively decreasing up the calf. Pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg): Class I (15–21 mmHg) for mild support, Class II (23–32 mmHg) for moderate medical-grade compression, and Class III (34–46 mmHg) for severe therapeutic use. Properly calibrated compression socks improve blood circulation, reduce swelling, prevent deep-vein thrombosis during long flights, and speed muscle recovery after sports. Available under Hobrik and Nuvinor for Ladies and Gents.
Single Cylinder vs Double Cylinder Knitting
Single cylinder knitting machines produce socks with a linked toe seam, which is the standard construction for most everyday socks. Double cylinder machines produce socks with a turned welt top and a fully fashioned, seamless toe — offering superior comfort, particularly for sensitive feet and diabetic-friendly applications. Double cylinder construction is used in select Hobrik and Nuvinor premium ranges.
